Miramar Landfill is the City of San Diego's landfill at 5180 Convoy St, off the 52. It is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and a small load costs a flat $75 for City trash. Bring a card, because cash is gone. One couch? Couch pickup starts at $69, which is less than the gate fee, and we do the carrying.

Miramar Landfill Hours (2026)

The landfill runs Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and is closed Sunday. Each drop off area at the entrance keeps its own schedule, so check yours before you load.

Where Does It Go? Item by Item

Most first timers assume everything goes in one pile. It does not. Sort the load using this table, and you can avoid paying the gate fee on things that were free across the driveway.

Landfill and Greenery prices are the small vehicle rates from the City's fee sheet, effective through June 30, 2027. Clean dirt has its own program, so call the City first.

How Much Does It Cost to Dump at Miramar?

Most people pay $75. That is the flat Tier 1 rate for City of San Diego trash under a ton. Trash from outside the City, like La Mesa or Chula Vista, is $86. Your vehicle sets the tier:

  • Tier 1, $75 or $86: car, SUV, minivan, most pickups and vans, or a trailer up to 5 by 9 feet.
  • Tier 2, $148 or $156: a pickup towing a trailer, a bigger trailer, or a medium or heavy truck.
  • Tier 3, $641 or $681: roll offs, 3 axle trucks and other commercial rigs.

Yes, $75 even if it is half empty. That flat rate is why one couch in the back of a pickup is such a bad deal. We keep the full breakdown by material on our San Diego dump fees page, and the source is the City fee sheet.

5 Things That Trip People Up

  1. No cash. Bring a credit card, a debit card with a Visa or Mastercard logo, or a check to City Treasurer.
  2. Cover the load or pay $50. Every load has to be covered, so keep a tarp and rope in the truck.
  3. No appliances or TVs past the booth. TVs, appliances, electronics and hazardous materials must be dealt with before you enter. Vehicles get random checks for hazardous material.
  4. Tell the truth about where it came from. City and non City trash are priced differently, and the sheet lists a false declaration fee.
  5. Trailers and rain do not mix. Bad weather can restrict or close access for trailers. Call the recording first.

Before you leave the house: pull up the Miramar live camera. It shows traffic at the fee booth, and it takes ten seconds to check.

Rather Not Do Any of That?

No tarp, no fee booth, no sorting. Flat pricing, and we load it from wherever it is sitting.

Miramar Recycling Center

The Miramar Recycling Center is at 5165 Convoy St, near the landfill entrance, and it runs on its own hours: Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Allan Company operates it, which is why you will see it called Allan recycling. Call 858-268-8971 for current prices.

  • Free: monitors, computers, laptops, TVs, mixed paper, barbecues and other ferrous metal, plus up to 7.5 gallons of cooking oil.
  • They pay you: CRV bottles and cans, plus scrap value on copper, brass, stainless and aluminum.
  • You pay: appliances and tires, per the table above. Small household electronics run $0.25 a pound.

A fridge is the one that surprises people. It weighs what it weighs, and you still have to get it on and off the truck. Our appliance removal starts at $100 for a single unit. Details are on the City recycling center page.

Free Mattress Drop Off at Miramar

This is the best free deal at the whole site. The Mattress Collection Site sits on the east side of the entrance at 5161 Convoy St, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. No Saturdays, which catches a lot of people.

  • Takes: mattresses, foam mattresses, box springs and futon mattresses off their frames. No drop off limit.
  • Refuses: wet, soiled or badly damaged mattresses, bed bug infestations, sofa beds, air mattresses and waterbeds.
  • Watch out: bring it mixed in with other waste and landfill fees may apply.

No truck, or stuck at work until 3? We pick up mattresses too. The City does not offer a mattress pickup. Rules are on the City mattress page.

Miramar Greenery: Mulch, Compost and Yard Waste

The Miramar Greenery shares the 5180 Convoy St address and the same 7 to 4 hours. City residents can self load up to 2 cubic yards of compost or 4 inch mulch for free with proof of residency. That is about two bathtubs.

ProductPer cubic yard
4 inch mulch$5
1/2 inch compost$12
2 inch mulch$12
Natural or plain wood chips$24

Bring your own shovel, container and tarp, because loads have to be covered going out as well. Pay at the fee booth, then show your receipt at the Greenery. Availability changes, so call 858-694-7000 first and check the City price list.

Hazardous Waste at Miramar

Paint, batteries, motor oil and chemicals go to the Household Hazardous Waste Transfer Facility at 5161 Convoy St, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is free for City of San Diego residents, but you must book an appointment and bring proof of residency.

  • Closed: November 28, December 26 and January 2.
  • Not taken: electronics, business waste, treated wood, appliances, asbestos, and containers over 5 gallons.
  • Outside the City? Unincorporated County residents call 877-713-2784. Other cities run their own programs.

We do not haul hazardous waste. During a garage or estate cleanout, we take everything around it and leave the paint and chemicals set aside for your appointment.

Getting to the Miramar Dump

Take State Route 52 to Convoy Street and go north. The entrance is right there, and it is the obvious site if you are coming from Clairemont, Kearny Mesa or Mira Mesa.

Closed on Sunday? EDCO Station in La Mesa opens Sundays. Our list of every San Diego dump site shows the other five, and Sycamore Landfill in Santee is closest from the east side.
